AN ESTIMATION OF ABOVE-AND BELOW-GROUND TREE BIOMASS OF A MANGROVE FOREST IN EAST KALIMANTAN, INDONESIA

Abstract: The estimation of above-and below, ground biomass of mangrove forest was carried out in Bukat Island, East Kalimantan in April to May 1994 using allometric relation method for photosynthetic part and woody non-photosynthetic parts. In terms of reproductive parts, the proportion allometric method was adopted.

The relationship between diameter and height of the tree as well as biomass and diameter for Rhizophora spp. was fairly good approximated by a hyperbolic function. Besides, Bruguiera spp.  the biomass of leaf, stem and branch followed an exponential function, Our result obtained showed that the biomass of mangrove forest in Bukat Island amounted to 134.169 ton/Ha consisting of  103.761 ton/Ha as above-ground biomass and 30.408 ton/Ha as below-ground biomass. About 51% of total biomass was shared by Rhizophora spp. and 49% shared by Bruguiera spp.
